 General Manager- Smoky Mountains (2018)



Position reports to: Regional Manager of Hospitality

Camp size: 50 tents

Camp season: Aug 2 – Nov 18, 2018 (Mar- Nov in 2019)

Months of work (GM): May- Nov 2018

Salary: salary + camp performance bonus 


General description of purpose:

Overall management responsibility for the operation of the camp including profitability, guest service, product quality, and overall cleanliness and maintenance of the property. Coaching and leading to create and maintain guest-driven operations with a vision that inspires the team to do their best. Oversee the quality process to ensure guest satisfaction by consistent delivery of both product quality and service to achieve the financial objective.



Employee's responsibilities shall include, but are not limited to: 


  • Operating Budget- Ensure achievement of annual budget in revenues, costs, and profits through accounting diligence and expenditure controls. Employ efficient accounting practices.


  • Departmental Objectives- Set written priorities and key objectives for each department. Ensure successful implementation and take corrective action when needed. Regularly inspect all areas of camp and assure that all SOPs are followed.


  • Forecasting- Complete monthly forecasting of operating staff and cost expenditures. Plan in accordance with forecasted sales and projected budgets.


  • Staff Relations- Develop a high level of trust and mutual respect with camp staff in order to reduce turnover and build employee engagement. Communicate effectively and constantly while building staff skill sets, knowledge, and abilities. Be visible and available to all staff while maintaining an open-door policy. Counsel with staff as needed to reduce internal conflict and promote well-being.


  • Staff Evaluation- Conduct performance appraisals and development plans for staff, correcting and disciplining when needed. Have regular one-on-one meetings with supervisors to ensure departments are running smoothly and within SOP, set goals, and improve engagement with staff.


  • Guest Service- Through example, establish a friendly, courteous, and service oriented approach to guests which can be also exhibited by all camp staff. Establish and implement guest service standards (SOP) for all departments.


  • Sales and Promotion- Regularly review sales solicitation activities, individual productivity, and marketing plans to assure best practices and maximization of sales actions. Work directly with sales department to implement successful events. Maintain credit policies, monitor negative sales trends and take steps to prevent financial loss.


  • Leadership- Ensure all company policies are known and followed. Present an accurate and effective image of successful leadership. Delegate appropriately. Confidently guide and direct camp activities. Terminate ineffective staff in a timely, but respectful manner.


  • Hiring- Using Under Canvas culture and policy guidelines, hire a staff of A+ employees with personalities and work ethics which will contribute to the success of the camp.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: 


  • Knowledge of hotel accounting principles
  • Knowledge of food and beverage operations and/or restaurant experience
  • Experience with hotel housekeeping, maintenance, concierge services, and sales
  • Extensive experience in customer service
  • Supervisory or management experience in a hospitality environment, including teambuilding, HR policies, and conflict management
  • Ability to effectively delegate responsibilities
  • Ability to provide effective corrective action
  • Ability to work for long periods of time outdoors in all temperatures and weather
  • Skillful at adaptation to change, personal improvement, and organization
  • Ability to be outgoing, pleasant, and empathetic even in confrontational situations
